Senior scientists Manindra Agarwal and Sandeep Shukla, the brains behind the exercise, pointed out that the country needs to upgrade its defences “without any delay” because the risk of cyber crime has doubled. They have submitted the study to the central government, and briefed the parliamentary committee on finance in this regard.

IIT-K signs MoU with Buffalo University for research projects

The Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur has signed an MoU with Buffalo University in the US to promote joint research in cyber security and environment related issues. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday between Buffalo University president Satish Tripathi and IIT Kanpur (IIT-K) director Indranil Manna. It is the first ever academic agreement between the two institutes. The two institutes will focus on cyber security and environment-related research projects of global interest and students will also have the option to research in other fields. According to the MoU, professors from the US-based varsity and IIT-K would select research scholars. "Though both the institutes will issue separate certificates to the research scholars, the final degree will be jointly given to the successful candidates," Manna said.

SANDEEP SHUKLA IS the Poonam and Prabhu Goel Chair Professor at IIT Kanpur. Along with his colleague Professor Manindra Agrawal, he set up the interdisciplinary Centre for Cybersecurity and Cyber Defence of Critical Infrastructure at the institute, which is shortly expected to launch India’s first industrial-scale cyber security test bed for power and manufacturing equipment. The State University of New York alumnus works closely with the Government. He serves on two panels created by the standing committee on cyber security at the RBI and also advises the Railways on its signalling systems.
